Altra Instinct Review

"They have worked so well that I've been too busy running to take time to blog about them."

That's high praise...

  1. Tuck,

In a post that I can't now find, you had mentioned that you had read a post on runblogger.com and said something to the effect of you understand what Pete is saying (relating to form and heel-toe drop in cushioned shoes) you still think that starting out barefoot is the way to go. What is your response to the Altra review? Do you think that even if the shoe is zero drop, ie. Altra, that has cushion, that you should run barefoot?

When would you suggest shifting over to zero drop shoes from barefoot?

    Thanks for your insight.

    Scott

  2. The post you mention is here. Blogger "unposted" a bunch of my posts during the recent outage. I thought I'd reposted them all, but missed that one.

I didn't start out barefoot, I started out in Vibrams. I would have thought you were insane to suggest going barefoot four years ago when I got my first pair of Vibrams. ;)

But I've learned a lot in the intervening years. Yes, you can start out in minimalist shoes, and you may never need to try going barefoot. I did so because I had issues with one leg, and going barefoot helped me sort out those issues.

I don't like any shoes with cushion. I've experimented a lot with the New Balance MT100s, and due to the leg issues I had above, they consistently gave me knee issues.

If you do start out barefoot, I'd suggest wearing shoes whenever you need to. :) Shoes are tools, that's all.
